Gonzaga Middle School (GMS) provides an enhanced, holistic, Manitoba Education approved, co-educational, culturally sensitive middle school education to Grade 6-8 students from low-income families in the Point Douglas and North East Downtown neighbourhoods of inner-city Winnipeg. It uses the unique middle school educational framework and best practices from Jesuit Nativity model schools and the NativityMiguel Coalition of Schools, adapting them to the community served in Winnipeg.
GMS lowers barriers to educational advancement and success through its strong academic program, longer school day, before and after school programming, extended school year (including summer camp weeks), enrichment activities, mentoring and graduate support programs. The school also provides a nutrition program (breakfast, lunch and two snacks), transportation to and from school, technology and other supports.
GMS provides an educational option for parents of children from a variety of faith and cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous, New-Canadian and other communities. In keeping with the best of the tradition of Jesuit education and the spirit of reconciliation called in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report, GMS is committed to being inclusive and respecting the faith and spiritual traditions of its students.
GMS respectfully provides the Gonzaga Middle School Statement on Reconciliation to explain this commitment.
The Gonzaga Middle School Board and Staff remembers Larry Morrisette who passed away before his time. We honour the contribution he made to the lives of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth, to education and broader social issues in the inner-city and North End. In particular, we recognize and honour him for his assistance in helping us develop a deeper understanding of reconciliation and relationship-building with the community.
